WHY SCUFFING MATTERS?
BRAND-NEW STAMPS, ESPECIALLY CLEAR ON SILICONE-BASED ONES LIKE IOD STAMPS, OFTEN HAVE A SMOOTH, SLIGHTLY GLOSSY SURFACE DUE TO THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS.
THIS CAN CAUSE INK OR PAINT TO BEAD UP, LEADING TO:
- UNEVEN COVERAGE
- BLURRY OR FAINT IMPRESSIONS
- INK SMUDGING
BY SCUFFING THE SURFACE, YOU CREATE A MICROSCOPIC TEXTURE THAT ALLOWS INK OR PAINT TO GRIP THE STAMP PROPERLY, LEADING TO SHARPER, MORE DETAILED IMPRESSIONS.
WHY IS THIS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR IOD STAMPS?
IOD STAMPS ARE LARGER, HIGHLY DETAILED, AND MADE FROM FOOD-SAFE, FLEXIBLE SILICONE, DESIGNED FOR USE WITH PAINT, INK, AND EVEN CLAY. THEIR EXTRA SMOOTH SURFACE MAKES THEM MORE PRONE TO INK BEADING, SO CONDITIONING IS ESSENTIAL.
PROPER SCUFFING:
- IMPROVES PAINT OR INK APPLICATION
- ENHANCES STAMP DETAIL AND DEFINITION
- PREVENTS SLIPPING AND SMUDGING
- EXTENDS THE LIFE OF THE STAMPS
HOW TO SCUFF IOD STAMPS
STEP ONE: MOVE YOUR STAMP TO A FLAT SURFACE
- FIRST MOVE YOUR STAMP AND SANDPAPER A FLAT SURFACE.
- USE A 220-GRIT OR FINE-GRIT SANDING BLOCK WORKS BEST.
- AVOID USING ANYTHING TOO COURSE, AS IT COULD DAMAGE THE DETAILS OF THE STAMP.
STEP TWO: SELECT YOUR STAMP
- SECONDLY, SELECT YOUR STAMP.
- IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH IRON ORCHID DESIGN STAMPS ALSO CALLED IOD STAMPS, THEY ARE HIGHLY DETAILED AND IN MY OPINION, LOVELY.
- IN ADDITION TO BEING LOVELY FOR THEIR IMPRESSIONS, IOD HAS MANY STAMPS TO CHOOSE FROM.
- THEY CAN BE PURCHASED ON ETSY AND EBAY.
STEP THREE: GENTLY SAND THE SURFACE
- TO PREPARE YOUR STAMP, LIGHTLY RUB THE SANDING PAPER ACROSS THE RAISED DESIGN OF THE STAMP.
- THE GOAL IS TO CREATE A BIT OF TEXTURE, NOT TO REMOVE MATERIAL.
ROTATE STAMP
- ALSO, ROTATE STAMP AND REPEAT THE PROCESS.
- THIS HELPS CREATE A UNIFORM CRISSCROSS TEXTURE ACROSS THE ENTIRE DESIGN.
STEP FOUR: WIPE OFF RESIDUE
- THEN USE A CLOTH, SLIGHTLY DAMP PAPER TOWEL OR A BABY WIPE TO REMOVE ANY DUST LEFT FROM SANDING.
STEP FIVE: TEST THE STAMP
- FINALLY, BEFORE USING IT ON YOUR PROJECT, DO A TEST STAMP ON SCRAP PAPER.
THIS QUICK PROCESS HELPS UNLOCK THE FULL POTENTIAL OF YOUR IOD STAMPS, MAKING YOUR DESIGNS SHARPER AND MORE PROFESSIONAL-LOOKING.
